MONTEVERDE
Shrouded in clouds, the stunning Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is famous for being one of the wildlife sanctuaries highlights of the New World Tropics.
A distinctive mountain rainforest where the humidity is usually 100%, Monteverde is home to more than 3000 species of animals and plants. Home to two magical cloud forest reserves bursting with mist and shades of green, Monteverde (meaning Green Mountain in Spanish) is one of Costa Rica’s most unique and peaceful destinations, located over 4,500 feet above sea level.
Cloud Forest Biological Reserve
The reserve spreads out over 10,500 hectares of land that hold six different life zones. The climate and terrain of the preserve produce an incredible bio-diversity.
There are at least 400 bird species in this high elevation rain forest, including the Resplendent Quetzal, ancient holy bird of the Mayans, over 100 species of mammals, 120 species of amphibians and reptiles and an estimated 2,500 species of plants making Monteverde a true “nature lover’s paradise”. Once you’ve reached the mountaintop you’ll first come upon the quaint town of Santa Elena.
Here you’ll find gift stores, accommodations, a bus stop, restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, banks and much more. Though Monteverde does not have a town center, it is comprised of a dirt road that leads to the Cloud Forest Reserve.
